“If you’re gonna be sad, you might as well be sad in Paris” – Serena van der Woodsen
Welcome to the world of Serena van der Woodsen- a glamorous socialite whose life is whirlwind of elite parties, boyfriends, and trendsetting. Known for her effortlessly chic style and captivating presence, Serena is the “it girl” of the Upper East side of Manhattan. As she navigates the dazzling highs and heartbreaking lows. On the surface, her story may sound like a glitz and glam lifestyle, but if you look beneath her killer wardrobe, you will find the emotional depth that lies beneath her stunning exterior. Dive into the complexities of Serena’s character, where each outfit tells a story, and every choice reveals her struggle for identity in a world that is constantly watching and judging her.
Look 1. Pilot Episode- Brown Leather Jacket Look:
In the shows kick off episode, Serena makes a bold entrance- back from boarding school early. She enters Chuck’s party with a chic outfit featuring these pieces:
- Brown Leather Jacket

This look perfectly captures her effortless, edgy vibe while establishing her as a fashionista right from the jump. The leather jacket attests to her rebellious spirit, a strong contrast from Blair’s pearls and Chuck’s designer suits. This outfit sets the tone for her character throughout the series, and it’s one of Serenas signature looks, highlighting her ability to perfectly blend comfort and style.
Look 2. Serena’s Prep School Style
Queen S is typically fashionably late for class. She likes to make an entrance, and her signature edgy prep style is sure to inspire your own back to school, or business casual fashion. Her signature pieces for these preppy looks are:
- White Button-Down Long Sleeves
- Fun Ties

- Tights
- Edgy Boots
- Studded and Chunky Purses
- Textured Gloves
To make the look more professional opt for:

These tweaks can used to bring Serena’s flair to your work wardrobe.
Look 3: The Bejeweled Black Dress
For Serena’s first date with Lonely Boy, Dan Humphrey, she rocks:
- Black Dress with Silver Jewels
- Silver Statement Earrings
- White Frosty Tights
- Mini Black Scrunched Leather Boots
- Black Leather Purse with Silver Hardware
This look is perfect for a night out, or to make a memorable impression on your first date. This look reminds us how a necklace isn’t always needed, with the perfect dress and neckline. Other versions of this dress that would be cute with a statement boot, would be:
- Sequin black dress
- Black Long sleeve dress with Silver Belt
- Black silk backless dress
- Red mini dress
- Champagne Dress
Serena’s style consists of statement jackets, playing with silhouettes, chic accessories, and classy boots. By adding some of these elements to your personal style, you can create an S worth outfit. Whether it’s adding a bohemian floral dress to a layered look or wearing a body con statement dress with minimal jewelry, big blowout hair, and tights- Serenas looks, day and night, are iconic and easily incorporated.
“Whoever said money doesn’t buy happiness didn’t know where to shop.” – Blair Waldorf
Look 4: Blair Breaks Out of Her Shell
One of my favorite Blair moments is in Gossip Girl Season 1, Episode 7, “Victor, Victrola.” Here, we see Blair shedding her typically controlled persona. After Nate, her long-term, “perfect” boyfriend, confesses that he doesn’t love her, Blair decides it’s time to let loose. She goes to a club- Victrola, with Chuck, who is curious—and a little doubtful—about her “wild side.” In true Blair fashion, she’s dressed in layers:
- Studded Headband
- Mint Lace Turtleneck Dress
- White Pearls
- Black Pearls
- A Sleek Belt
- Tan Tights with Black Stitching
- White Lingerie Slip Dress
But when she steps onto the stage, she unzips her layered dress to reveal a bold, white slip beneath. This fearless move not only shocks Chuck but also marks the start of Blair’s complicated, passionate relationship with him.
The scene perfectly captures Blair’s struggle between control and desire. Gossip Girl says it best herself after the scene, despite Blair’s efforts “It’s human nature to be free. And no matter how long you try to be good, you can’t keep a bad girl down.” This scene captures Blair stepping outside of her carefully crafted image. Shes defiant, and makes a fearless choice, marking a pivotal shift in how she handles both her relationships and her identity. In the moment it felt like self-reclamation, but in Episode 8 “Seventeen Candles”, Blair is caught between newfound regrets and her lingering desire for control. The night at Victrola is a painful memory, as she begins to question her choices. With her upcoming birthday celebration, she is reminded of her “perfect” life that’s now unraveling. She begins to struggle with personal desires and her mother’s expectations, setting up a complicated dynamic that carries into her relationship with Chuck.
Look 5: Blair’s Red Theory
Blairs choices of red, white, and blue elements in her outfits throughout Gossip Girl is more than just a nod to her preppy elegance; it plays into her character’s identity, and transformation. These colors often associated with Americana, hint at Blair’s traditional values and upbringing, as well as her need to embody “old money” sophistication.
Red, in particular, allows Blair to command attention and stand out in a crowd, reflecting her ambition and determination to be accepted by her family and gain admission to her dream school, Yale. Her iconic pieces often contract with her otherwise polished style, blending tradition and rebellion to express her true self. This vibrant color palette showcases her multifaceted personality and deep aspirations.
Here are some red pieces that are sure to help you stand out:
Look 6: Blair’s Heartbreaking Thanksgiving
In Season 1, Episode 8 of Gossip Girl, titled “You’ve Got Yale”, Blair Waldorf serves up a stunning brown layered look that says more than just style. It’s a look so beautiful, it can distract her Thanksgiving guests from quarrelling with her mother at the dinner table. At the Waldorf Thanksgiving, Blair wears:
- Marc By Marc Jacobs dress
- Dupe Brown Lace Dress with Black and White Trim
- Trina Turk Shawl Dupe
- Gold statement necklace
- Black Lace Tights
- Black Lace Heels
- Brown Headband
Blair’s Thanksgiving begins to spiral of control when she realizes her father has not returned for their cherished holiday traditions. Her mother, cold and distant, reveals she gave her father’s beloved pumpkin pie to the butler and insists Blair true a “wonderful catered dessert” instead. For Blair, nothing can replace her father’s pie, which only deepens her disappointment and frustration. Unable to address the real issue- the absence of her father and her mother’s indifference- Blair’s emotions overwhelm her. In a moment of despair, clutching an apple pie, and falls back into old binge-eating habits.
Struggling and overwhelmed, Blair calls Serena, who arrives and finds her friend on the floor. Serena lifts Blair up and brings her back to Dan’s Thanksgiving, which they ditch, and get sandwiches. This heartfelt moment between S and B helps Blair feel grounded, and she decides to call her doctor, taking steps toward recovery. This powerful episode shows Blair reaching to Serena for help and moving toward healthier choices.
This glimpse behind her perfect exterior reveals Blair’s humanity: she’s a girl wrestling with her insecurities, struggling to define her own path. Even for someone as poised as Blair, she has her family struggles that affect her behavior and habits. Shes trying to cope in her carefully curated world. Lucky for B, even with their problems, S will always be there for her.
“All of the boyfriends and mean girls and teachers, and our crazy mothers, we went through it together. We raised each other.”
Throughout Gossip Girl, the fashion statements made by Blair Waldorf and Serena Van der Woodsen are integral to their character development and the themes of identity, friendship, and self-acceptance. Blair’s meticulously curated outfits showcase her ambition, tradition, and the pressures she faces as she navigates her family dynamics and social status. Each outfit tells a story, from her classic headbands, which symbolize her desire for control- to her more daring choices that reflect her journey towards embracing her womanhood.
In contrast, Serena’s style embodies a free-spirited approach to fashion, often showcasing her confidence and natural beauty. Her effortless looks from bohemian dresses to chic casual wear, reflect her journey of self-discovery and the complexities of her relationships, especially with Blair. Their dynamic is beautifully illustrated through their fashion: Blair is structured and formal, while Serena embraces a more laid-back, adventurous style that invites exploration and authenticity.
Together, they create a visual narrative that highlights their contrasting yet complementary personalities. Their outfits not only serve as expressions of their individuality, but also shows their evolving friendship as they support each other through life’s challenges. Ultimately, the fashion in Gossip Girl is not just about trends; it’s a powerful tool for storytelling that captures the essence of these two iconic characters as they navigate the complexities of youth, ambition, and the search for their identities in their glamorous yet demanding world.
